The post I selected was an image for an anti-meth ad. The ad features two men tying down an older man and the text reads "Beating an old man for money isn't normal. But on meth it is.". The models in this ad seem to be younger aged, especially the one on the right in my opinion. Do you think the models are portrayed to be young for a reason? Why are all of the actors in this ad men? Do you think the photographer did this on purpose? Is there a reason that the text is white on a dark background? Do you think the text was placed in the middle of the ad for a specific reason?
I am responding to a question posed by Matt. I believe the models are portrayed young for a specific reason. Rhetoric in an advertisement plays a huge affect on the audience that the ad will mean the most too. Teens and young kids are portrayed in the images because the ad is specifically targeting that age kids to the message in the ad. It is trying to say that using meth can leads one to do things they would not normally do and that could get them in a lot of trouble. The use of the children is vital to the appeal to the younger age. Secondly, the text is placed in the middle of the image to amplify the meaning. Most of the action in the ad is placed in the middle, and the text being there is trying to form a correlation in ones mind with the words and the actions portrayed. This way of advertising helps one to remember what the image is trying to portray. Those are two of the ways that the rhetoric affects the meaning and audience of the advertisement.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jacob that the ad targets teens. The teenage years are often when people first encounter and abuse illegal drugs, so the ad uses teenagers in order to appeal to that audience.
DeleteI am responding to this post using prompt 1. Montana Meth Project uses many rhetoric techniques in this ad with the clear intention of scaring people away from meth. The powerful pathos included in the graphic and camera concentration would definitely receive an immediate response from the audience. Right from the first look at the image, the audience would first see the man lying on the ground, surrounded by two kids who are robbing his possessions, with the text "beating an old man is not normal, but on meth it is" floating right at the middle of all the actions. The bullet through the middle of the man's head implies that he is already dead, which further implies that people would not hesitant to kill off anyone when they are on meth. Montana Project specifi uses teenagers as the robbers and killers in this image, but I do not think it matters much since their main message is "People, regardless of age or sex, would do anything once they are on meth." One thing to mention though is that the use of the man with the suit as the victim might have decreased the pathos level, since the rich are usually the ones that get robbed. A more effective way to increase the sympathy of the audience is to replace the man with an older, more helpless old man. Lastly, my question for other students is that do you think these teenagers are already on meth, or are they robbing the money in order to purchase meth?
ReplyDeleteI am responding to this post using blog prompt 1. This advertisement is very similar to some of the other ones Montana Meth Project has made. The message about the fact that terrible things become normal when on meth is a powerful one. As Matt brought up, I believe that the bolded white font on the darker background what strategic because it stands out amongst the images in the background. The position and angle of the mens' heads is in this way for a reason as well. The kid taking the wallet out of the man's pocket and the other guy who appears to be stealing a television both have their heads down. These two guys are focused on the man and taking whatever they can for money so that they can buy meth. These men are lost and not themselves anymore and the fact that they are looking away from the camera shows that they have no remorse and are only focused on what they want to do. The old man that is being beaten and being robbed is looking directly at the viewer. The creators of this advertisement made this small detail on purpose because it influences the viewer and they feel sympathy for this man. The viewer thinks about how immoral this is, and then they connect it to the fact that these men have become addicted to meth and will do anything to get more.
ReplyDeleteI am responding to this post. In my own opinion, this ad is successful, especially for young people because as we know, more and more young are beginning to take drugs even though their families are not rich enough. And all of us can observe that all actors are men, personally I think men could have more possibilities to beat an old man (physical attack), and women might do something different, such as sell their bodies (like an ad of meth we saw before) The purpose of this ad is to indicate that more and more young people are being addicted to meth and they do not have enough money, thus, they do something illegal. Those word written in white could be a strong comparison to the dark background. And it is a obvious message the creator wants all of us to know.
ReplyDeleteI am responding to Matt's question of using younger actors in this advertisement. I believe that this was intentional of the photographer and that using younger actors targets a wider audience. The audience affected includes people of a younger generation and people of an older generation as they are the victim of this ad. Meth affecting people so young would cause the older generation to take concern as they are the ones that should be teaching and leading the younger generations. An old man is seen in this ad as helpless and the victim of two younger gentlemen. The audience must infer that the actions seen are not typical, but on meth they are 'normal' behavior.
ReplyDeleteI am responding to this poster and Matt's questions.I think the author use all actors for kids must have his reason, that rhetoric in the poster gives a huge influence that the ad will raise more believe too. young kids play an important role as a group of teen who are less self control and needs for meth by criminal behaviors. The author use actors of men may be is a way of raise the commercial's realistic, because girls are not likely doing that kind of bad robber things. As an audience, i realize the all people in that picture are face to different direction with their own stories but still looks harmonious in the whole picture. The text placed in the middle can amplify the advertisement's purpose and tell reader meth make people not them self anymore. People will feel more sympathy the old man when they see the small children hurt him at home, that will give a strong implication of audience helps them remember meth's bad effect.
